Preventing Split Nails During Winter Months

Cracks in skin and nails are not only unsightly, but can create openings for infection.  Retaining moisture in hands and nails during the winter months is such a challenge, and that’s why fingernails are prone to split and chip during this season.  As we’re cranking up the heat indoors, the air drys out. As we’re heading outdoors, the low humidity sucks all the moisture from any exposed skin and nails.  So wherever we are, whether indoors or out, our skin and nails struggle to retain moisture.

Keeping hands and nails healthy during the winter months is not a completely lost cause, however. Here are some tips to help you keep your fingernails moisturized and prevent damage and splitting.

Apply Oil or Banana Paste: Olive oil, and vitamin E oil are good choices for use on nails and cuticles. Just drop a small amount onto nails and rub into the cuticle and nail. Let it sit for a few minutes before getting into a nice hot bath or shower. Be careful not to get it in your eyes! If you choose to make the Banana Paste recipe, here is a great one.

Nail Soak: Cocoa butter (melted) and Tea Tree oil is a fantastic combo for a nail soak. This one-two punch combines the moisturizing properties of cocoa butter with the antiseptic and healing properties of Tea Tree oil for a soothing, healthful treat for dry, brittle nails and cuticles.

Eat Your Veggies and Fruits: Vitamin A, E and Calcium are all extremely important for healthy skin and nails, so make sure you’re eating a balanced diet including fresh fruits and vegetables each day.  Broccoli, Kale, Greens are great sources of BOTH Vitamins and Calcium.

Avoid Drying Out: Infusing moisture IN is fantastic, but it’s also important to prevent moisture loss as much as possible.  Wear kitchen gloves when washing dishes or removing clothes from the washer.  Wear thermal gloves and mittens when going outdoors and limit the amount of exposure your hands have to extreme cold.  Keep moisturizers in several areas of your life – your desk at work, your home office, your craft room, your living room, the kitchen.  Everywhere you go throughout the day, if you have moisturizer nearby, you will use it!
